In June 2004 the New Zealand Government’s Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST, now the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment) provided funding for the development of a regional RiskScape Model.

The organisational structure adopted was a 50:50 joint venture comprising GNS Science and the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA).

In 2008 FRST agreed to fund the programme for a further 8 years and it is now part of the core science projects within GNS Science and NIWA.

In addition to core core science project funding, commercial work is undertaken by GNS Science and NIWA which contributes to the development of RiskScape software and modules.
